About us

The story of the CMH Label Group begins with bluegrass, but future chapters include metal, rap, punk, meditation, and children’s music. CMH founder Martin Haerle, a former Starday and United Artist Records executive, grew up in Germany as a country western and bluegrass fan. Together with Arthur Smith of “Dueling Banjos” and “Guitar Boogie” fame, he formed CMH Records in 1975, and recorded first-generation bluegrass heroes Lester Flatt, Mac Wiseman, and the Osborne Brothers, as well as country music hall-of-famers Grandpa Jones and Merle Travis. In 1990 David Haerle became president of the label and created the Pickin’ On series, which features top bluegrass musicians performing tributes to such popular musical acts as Green Day and Metallica. Collectively, the series has sold over one and a half million albums since its inception. Some of CMH’s acclaimed artist offerings are Strummin’ with the Devil: The Southern Side of Van Halen featuring David Lee Roth, Heart Trouble by the Queen of Rockabilly, Wanda Jackson, and The Nashville Acoustic Sessions featuring Raul Malo, the voice of the Mavericks. Coming soon is a musical celebration of legendary country fiddler Johnny Gimble featuring Vince Gill, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, and Garrison Keillor. Over the years the CMH Label Group established several distinct labels to house new formats and artists.
